DEXA Body Composition Scan

The gold standard for measuring what a scale can't: exact body fat percentage, lean tissue, visceral fat, and bone mineral density — with regional detail down to each arm and leg.

Why DEXA instead of BMI?

BMI is a single ratio of height to weight — it can't tell the difference between someone who's lean and muscular and someone who's carrying excess fat. DEXA uses low-dose x-ray to physically separate fat, lean tissue, and bone, so you get an actual measurement instead of an estimate.

Built for tracking change

A DEXA scan is most useful as a baseline you repeat. If the scale isn't moving but your body is changing, DEXA is what shows it — fat loss and muscle gain can happen at the same time and cancel each other out on a scale.

Protecting muscle on GLP-1s

On a GLP-1 medication, as much as 30% of weight lost can be lean mass — exactly what you want to keep. Regional DEXA data shows whether you're losing fat or muscle, limb by limb, so you can adjust training and protein intake accordingly.

What to expect

A 7-minute scan, a 30-minute visit

  • Lie still on the scanning table for about 6–11 minutes while the scanner passes over your body.
  • No fasting required, though we recommend avoiding a large meal in the 1–2 hours beforehand.
  • Wear workout or casual clothing with minimal metal — small zippers and buttons are fine.
  • Remove shoes, jewelry, belts, and anything with significant metal before scanning.
  • Start with a baseline, then re-scan every 12–30 weeks for progress checks, or annually for maintenance.
Who it's not for

Limitations to know before booking

You cannot be pregnant or trying to become pregnant to receive a DEXA scan.

  • Maximum weight for an accurate scan is approximately 350 lbs.
  • You need to be able to lie still on your back for 6+ minutes.
  • Avoid GI contrast or radionuclide procedures within 7 days of your scan.
  • Around 250 lbs+, a left-arm or visceral fat reading may not be guaranteed due to scanner limitations.

Radiation exposure is comparable to about 4 bananas or a cross-country flight — well below a standard chest X-ray. More on DEXA safety →
